Lakeland, FL – Man Killed After Segway and Car Crash on U.S. 92/Fairway Ave.

Lakeland, FL (October 26, 2025) – A tragic collision claimed the life of a 31-year-old man riding a Segway electric scooter on Friday evening, October 24, on U.S. Highway 92 near Fairway Avenue, east of Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. when the victim, identified as Joshua Caleb Carpenter of Lakeland, attempted to cross U.S. 92 in or near a marked crosswalk. As he entered the westbound lanes, he was struck by a 2000 Toyota Avalon driven by 60-year-old Andrew Almaraz of Winter Haven.

Deputies confirmed that Almaraz had a green light and was traveling at an appropriate speed at the time of the impact. Despite the swift response of first responders, Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. Almaraz was not injured and fully cooperated with investigators. Traffic in the area was temporarily diverted as authorities documented the scene and began reconstructing the events leading to the crash.
